The Faculty of History of “St. Cyril and St. Methodius” University of Veliko Tarnovo and its Centre for Medieval Studies, in collaboration with the University of Bucharest and the Balkan History Association, are delighted to invite you to an anniversary international conference entitled The Second Bulgarian Tsardom and Its Role in the Historical Development of Medieval South Eastern Europe. The Balkans and Lower Danube River Basin in XII – XV C.

The conference is dedicated to the the 840th anniversary of the Uprising of Peter and Asen, and the creation of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom and will be held on October 24th-26th, 2025 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in the facilities of the “St. Cyril and St. Methodius” University of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.

The international conference aims at promoting and discussing new research and analyses of the processes and events that led to the restoration of the Bulgarian Tsardom at the end of the 12th century, as well as those dedicated to its role in the overall historical development of the Lower Danube Basin and the Balkans in the following three centuries. The Organizing Committee welcomes and encourages the presentation of new written and archaeological evidence revealing Bulgarian-Byzantine, Bulgarian-Wallachian, Bulgarian-Serbian, Bulgarian-Hungarian and other relations in the period, as well as reports and publications in the fields of cultural, economic, and social development of societies in the Lower Danube Basin and the Balkan Peninsula in the 12th–15th centuries.

The topics of reports may include: history, archaeology, military history, art history, epistolography, numismatics, sphragistics, manuscript studies, prosopography, everyday culture, ethnic and identity studies, spatial and topographical studies, ecclesiastical studies, climatology and environmental history, textology, and other studies.

The regulations of the scholarly conference stipulate that each participant will present their thesis in a 20-minute presentation. The reports, up to 15 standard pages long, will be published in a separate volume after a selection procedure and scientific editing.

The procedural languages of the conference are Bulgarian, English and French.

The conference will be held in an in-person format.

There is no participation fee.

Deadline for submitting an application for participation – April 27, 2025.

Deadline for submitting materials for publication – October 1, 2025.

Requirements for formatting the reports submitted for publication will be sent by May 12, 2025, to the e-mail addresses of those who applied for participation.

The applications should be sent to cms.if.vtu@ts.uni-vt.bg and need to specify the following information:
