The Balkan History Association was represented by its Vice-President, Dorina Dragnea, at the international conference “Ethnographies of Orthodox Christianity: Holism, Comparison, and Exploration”, organized on February 16-17, 2023 by the Department of Anthropology of the University College London. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyatira and Great Britain (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) and the Antiochian Archdiocese of the British Isles and Ireland (Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East) supported the event as partners.
This conference brought Orthodox scholars, clergy, and laity together with scholars of Orthodox Christianity to explore faith and practice. They discussed and shared fieldwork experiences on “sensational forms”, material culture, senses and sounds, and the orthopraxy of the different Orthodox communities, studied regionally and locally. The keynote speaker was Renee Hirschon from the University of Oxford. Other speakers were from various universities in UK, USA, Greece and Austria. The event took place inside the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross & Archangel Michael in London, part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyatira and Great Britain. The accommodation and travel expenses were borne by the organizers.
